I TEACH CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY.
CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY IS A PRETTY POPULAR CLASS,
BECAUSE I THINK STUDENTS COME IN AND THEY'RE
THINKING IT'S GOING TO BE A LOT OF STORYTELLING AND
MAYBE SOME MOVIE WATCHING, BUT WHAT THEY DON'T EXPECT
IS THE REAL REASON FOR WHICH WE STUDY
MYTHOLOGICAL STORIES, WHICH IS THIS CLOSE
EXAMINATION OF THE HUMAN CONDITION, BECAUSE
MYTHOLOGICAL STORIES TRANSCEND TIME AND
GEOGRAPHICAL DISTANCES AND CULTURAL DISTANCES.
SO TRADITIONALLY IN CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY IT
ALWAYS ENDS WITH THE HERO'S JOURNEY, AND I
ALWAYS GAVE A FINAL EXAM ASKING STUDENTS TO RECALL
THE ARCHETYPAL MOTIFS OF THE HERO'S JOURNEY.
THE HERO HAS A CALL TO ACTION, REFUSES THE CALL,
ACCEPTS THE CALL, GOES ON A QUEST, IN COMES THE
NURTURING MOTHER FIGURE.
THERE ARE TRIALS AND TESTS AND TEMPTATIONS AND, OF
COURSE, THERE ARE DRAGONS TO SLAY, AND FINALLY THE HERO
WILL DESCEND INTO THE UNDERWORLD OR FALL INTO THE ABYSS.
AND IT'S IN THIS DARK SPACE THAT THERE'S A
TRANSFORMATION OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND EVERYTHING CHANGES.
SO WHAT I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU IS ENCOURAGED BY LISA
AND INSPIRED BY MY COLLEAGUE JENA ROBERTSON
WHO SAID TO HER STUDENTS, JUST SHOW ME, JUST SHOW
ME WHAT YOU LEARNED.
SO I DID THAT.
I DROPPED THE REIGNS OF CONTROL AND SAID JUST SHOW ME.
SHOW ME WHAT YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE HERO'S JOURNEY.
SO I CHOSE CODY CHEE WHITESINGER AND ASKED HIS
PERMISSION TO USE HIS FINAL PROJECT, BECAUSE
CODY IS THAT STUDENT WHO SO EASILY COULD HAVE BEEN
OVERLOOKED, BECAUSE IN A CLASS OF 34, HE NEVER SAID
A WORD, NOT IN BIG GROUP DISCUSSIONS, SMALL GROUP
DISCUSSIONS, NEVER SAID A WORD.
AND YET, WHEN WE PRESENTED OUR FINAL PROJECTS,
IT WAS THE REST OF US WHO WERE SPEECHLESS.
SO I QUITE HUMBLY PRESENT TO YOU CODY CHEE WHITESINGER.
AND SO I THANK LISA FOR ENCOURAGING ME TO LET GO OF
THE CONTROL, BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED AND WHAT A GIFT.
A GIFT FOR CODY WHO TOOK FROM THE CLASS AN ARTIFACT WITH
HIM THAT I THINK HE'LL KEEP FOREVER AND REALLY GIVE TO
ALL OF US WHO WERE IN THE CLASS, BECAUSE IT WAS THAT
IMPORTANT REMINDER THAT EVERY SINGLE DAY WE ARE
SITTING NEXT TO OR IN FRONT OF AMAZING PEOPLE
WHO DO HAVE A HERO STORY TO TELL AND TECHNOLOGY,
PERHAPS, MAY BE THAT THING THAT GIVES THEM THE VOICE
THEY MIGHT NOT OTHERWISE HAVE HAD.
SO ENJOY YOUR DAY AND I LOOK FORWARD TO EVERYTHING
