A visiting U.S. official has emphasized the need to improve strained ties
between Korea and Japan. After meeting with Korean officials in Seoul
Sunday, U.S. Assistant Secretary
of State for East Asia, Daniel Russel said the world cannot afford strained
ties between the two leading democracies in the region.
His comments suggest Washington may consider acting as a mediator to
improve relations strained by a series of historical and territorial disputes.
While tensions between Tokyo and Beijing have also intensified, Japanese
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, speaking to CNN, said China must have good
relations with its neighbors to maintain economic development.
Abe then said Japan does not want to engage in a military confrontation
with China but has the responsibility of protecting its land and waters.
