Hi there! In this video we went out in the desert to
find a wild desert cottontail. These rabbits live in the Southwest desert where it can
get really really hot. In fact it's going to be over 115 degrees today.
Since these bunnies don't have an air conditioners or a pool, they have to find other ways to
try and cool themselves down. Shoot, these fuzzbutts even have on a fur coat.
Here we can see that this cottontail has scratched out a ditch. She lays her belly flat out on
the cooler soil and has her ears up. Desert cottontails have larger ears than those in
the colder north. These big ears have blood vessels that are close to the skin and help
them dissipate heat. You probably won't see these cottontails out
much during the heat of the day. Once the sun goes down a bit, they will then go out
and look for food. Ok, I think it's time to leave the bunny and
head back into the ac.
