Hi, I'm AJ Hartman and today I'm going to talk with you about the timing and tempo of
songs. When people talk about the time of a song they are basically talking about how
many beats there are to a specific segment of that song. So, for example if they are
talking about four four time that's going to be four beats to a measure, or that the
period of the song that they are talking about. In a song there is a finite number of beats
and as far as tempo goes is measured per minute. A beat is just something that is down, it
just plows through the song and is a constant timing mechanism. So songs can range from
60 beats per minute which means there is a beat every second, to upwards of a couple
hundred. A common tempo is 120 beats per minute. That means there are two beats every second.
So basically your tick-tock on the clock. That's just the typical way people flow through
then song. You have your beats per minute, and your time signature in order to tell what
timing that song is and how fast you are going to play that song.
