Well, I'm happy to report to you that two education deals that I authored,
Senate Bill 267 and Senate Bill 268,
just passed the House.
When they come back to the Senate, I will concur on those pieces of legislation,
and they will be signed by the governor.
One of course had to do with early childhood
education.
That bill passed, and what it will do is to make certain that this
state, at long last,
will have a plan for
prekindergarten and kindergarten students.
The other bill dealt with child *** abuse.
We had alarming statistics stated about one in four
boys and one in seven girls had been
sexually molested. There's some 42 million
people who live with the burden of having being sexually molested,
and what this bill would do was to set up procedures for recording,
make certain that young people know the proper things to do when
they are being abused,
it helps teachers and parents be able to spot
children who are being sexually abused so that we won't ever have an occasion when
a child would say "I didn't know what to do,"
I didn't know what to do."
So those are two pieces of legislation I think we can be proud of this session
that they passed and knowing that our young people
are going to be better off today than they were yesterday.
