[gunfire] [Sgt. J. Fisher] Soldiers of Third Army
take their expertise to sea, combining soldiering skills with air defense
and water craft security. [gunfire continues] Man overboard! >>[female speaker] Man overboard!
[Fisher] Troops practice a number of objectives in one exercise.
Leaders say this is another way Granite Shield, an overall mission to be as prepared as possible
to meet any threat, sharpens Third Army's focus.
[male speaker] This has everything to do with Granite Shield.
It deals with fighting off a hostile approach on a vessel,
dealing with MEDEVAC procedures, dealing with a soldier lost overboard.
And Granite Shield is very unique to the vessels. So this program is specifically tailored to
them to train them on these type of events in support of Granite Shield.
[Fisher] In one scenario, soldiers exercise MEDEVAC procedures,
force protection, personnel recovery, and never miss a beat.
[helicopter whirring] [male speaker] Basically, we've just got to
take it step by step, take care of the small stuff at that time,
and then the next thing you know, it turns into a nice, big, pretty picture.
[Fisher] Soldiers say exercises covering a number of obstacles
help prepare them should the circumstances become a reality in their region.
[male speaker] It means for us that at any given time
something in a real-life scenario could happen right here, and we have to be prepared for
that. So we do constant training to make sure all
of our guys are technically and tactically proficient.
[Fisher] Taking over a hundred warfighters and a handful of vessels
to put this exercise into action, troops with Third Army
show they can sustain the fight and be ready at a moment's notice.
