today we're going to learn how to use
sign posts to guide our reading. when we drive but we use sign posts to help us
understand where to go
and what the rules of the road are. When we're reading there are similar signposts
that can help us understand what we're reading better these signpost are called
the notice and note
strategies designed by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst.
There are six strategies altogether that are recommended to help you understand
better you what you're reading.
The first one that we're going to look at in this video is called
a memory moment. When you spot a memory moment
you need to stop noticed what's going on in the story
and make a note of it. A memory moment
will happen when you're reading and the author interrupst the action of the story
to share some sort of memory. When this happens
ask yourself why might this memory
be important. The answer will usually tell you about the internal conflicts
and character development.
or maybe it will foreshadow something that happens later in the story.
If you can't understand why the memory is important at the moment
just keep reading often times that question is answered
a little bit later. So what do you look for
when trying to find memory moment? Well sometimes it's very obvious
the author character will say something like remember a time when
but other times it a little more subtle. A memory moment might be disguised as
the dream
and some sort of a flashback. Look for a story about when I was younger
or maybe somebody may drift off and
imagine something that happened long ago. I would like to look specifically at an
example
of memory moment from them novel Watsons go to Birmingham
so please pause this video in turn to the beginning of Chapter five
page 64 in your book.
Follow along
as I read it aloud. Byron got caught lighting matches again
and it look like this time mama was going to do what she
always said she would that's when Joetta turned on the tears and cried and
begged
so much their mama let him off she swore to him now
that the next time he got caught playing with matches she
was going to burned him she told us that
same sad old story about how when she was a little girl
her house caught on fire and for two years after that she and her brothers
had to wear clothes that smelt like smoke even though the story made
mama and Joey get all sad and sobby it was kinda funny to me in By.
We'd heard it so many times that By and me even gave it a name.
H called it mama's smokey the bear story.
Now if you continue to read the chapter you you recall that moma
do exactly what she
she threatened to do. she tried to burn Byron's fingers with matches
when he was playing with them again.
And to the reader that seems like a really harsh
punishment but by examining this memory moment
and thinking about why he was this memory important
I think it helps us to understand mama a little bit better.
The fact that she had gone through a fire up her own
and that it was traumatic for her
really helps us to understand that she struggles with what happened to her.
And so fire is something that is very very scary to mama.
And so by examining this memory moment we can
understand the internal conflict the mama is having.
It also may help us make predictions about something that will happen.
It might also help readers provide an understanding of themes
in this case maybe about the importance of family.
So be sure to examine memory moment
again ask yourself why is it important.
If it's a troubling memory does that tell you something about a conflict?
Is the memory there to provide guidance? If so
does it tell about the theme?
So good luck finding those memory moments.
