Hi, This is Bob. I am presenting you Rosegarden and Qsynth in LinuxMint11.
We are going to get Sound to work in Rosegarden and Qsynthesizer in this simple video tutorial.
These are some basic important settings and troubleshooting guidelines.
Remember to: Firstly: Enable MIDI, and select alsa _seq
Secondly: Use Pulseaudio or Alsa
and Thirdly: Load a soundfonts into Qsynthesizer
Fluid R3 _GM.sf2 for example
Also: Use "Manage MIDI Devices"
in Rosegarden to
Map "playback" to "Synth Input Port"
WE Will see how this done in a minute's time.
Before that take note of some troubleshooting Tips and Tricks!
Firstly Launch another audio-video application Example: VLC
Secondly, Launch Qsynth before Rosegarden
To fix the No Sound issue, Quit Rosegarden to "Reset", Panic and Restart Qsynth
Once the sound issue is fixed, DO NOT Restart or Quit Qsynth
To fix cracking and noisy sound in Rosegarden,
Run multiple "Audio-Video" programs and adjust their sound level, stop them, quit and
restart them again if necessary
Remember to: Have a coffee break!
Hello, there! Welcome to LinuxMint11
Well, what I have done here is: I have launch VLC.
Showing this particular video
Let me increase the volume louder
Next I am launching Qsynth Synthesizer
Yes, I have launched it in the background Let me bring it forward
Here it is: Qsynth, a synthesizer
Let's look at the Setup
What's important to setup is to Enable MIDI Input
Let me zoom it up for you (follow larger Mouse Pointer)
Set the MIDI Driver to alsa_seq
Follow the bigger mouse pointer
Select "alsa_seq" from the drop-down
My Engine Name is "FluidR3_GM"
Now, Let's go through the Audio Tab
Set Audio Driver to "PulseAudio"
You may also use "ALSA"
I am not using JACK
Use ALSA or PulseAudio
Leave all other settings as is.
Leave "Audio Device" empty. It defaults to default.
We are done with "Audio" tab, Let's go to the "Soundfonts"
Soundfonts are IMPORTANT!
LOAD a Soundfont to hear any sound from Rosegarden.
Use [FluidR3_GM.sf2]
Use the "Open" button to Load in the Soundfont
Google and Download it from the Internet. (or Search "Fluid" in your Repo)
Select and Open "FluidR3_GM.sf2"
Let's go through the Settings tab
You can see All the Settings here!
alsa_device remain as "default"
audio.driver changed from jack to pulseaudio
current setting is Pulseaudio
(Drag to resize the Dialog box)
Use this to know what the default settings were!
jack.id was changed for easy reference in rosegarden
I will show you later in rosegarden
We are done with setting Qsynth Setup
I am not saving since I did not change anything
(Do NOT click on Quit! Click "Close" and remain in background)
Now, run Rosegarden
(Note: VLC will mute upon launching Rosegarden and unmute when I quit it)
(Note: VLC Muted!)
Quit Rosegarden, Restart Qsynth and Restart Rosegarden
We need to Restart Qsynth First!
Click Reset, Panic a few times and Restart!
Click [Messages] button to see it in action.
Click [Yes] to confirm Restart
(Follow bigger mouse pointer)
"Close" without quitting
Launch Rosegarden again
This time it takes longer to launch. (VLC not muted)
But this is Good.
This means Qsynth will "playback" sound from Rosegarden
(VLC is still playing in the background)
Let's check the MIDI Device Settings
Manage MIDI Devices (Button at Top Left)
(Click on it Once)
(Click on this Too)
(To set MIDI output to Qsynth Input)
Click [Draw] button (Top Middle)
Click and Drag to draw

Click to put in your notes
We will play this in a Loop
Shift Drag in "ruler bar" area
Before that, we will use the "Eraser" to fix the extra note
Click on Play to start
[Shift-Drag] from here to the end
(Now Rosegarden will LOOP the music while we explore further)
(VLC and Rosegarden) is playing back sound)
Let's kick up Hydrogen Drum Machine!

Use a simple "Engine Name" e.g: FluidR3_GM
Let me show you that in Rosegarden, hang-on....
Here we go... again
