Hi this is Miranda Thacker with your KYTC Minute. The Sherman Minton Bridge, which carries
I-64 between Louisville with southern Indiana, is currently the Number one transportation
issue in the Midwest. The 50-year-old bridge was ordered closed September Ninth after a
crack was discovered in a weld in a critical spot. Since then, engineers, law enforcement
and government leaders have been working to get the bridge reopened and to manage new
traffic patterns during the closure. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear recently addressed public concerns.
This has been a difficult time for all of us in this area. And a very inconvenient
time for lots of folks in this area. But I can assure you of one thing. We are moving
as fast as humanly possible to conclusively diagnose our situation here and figure out
the solution and how fast we can move to get that solution implemented. Governor Beshear
stated that a total inspection of the bridge is expected to be completed in early October.
U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the Sherman Minton bridge
“would be fixed in a timely way so that people can start using it again.”
On this particular bridge as soon as we know what it will take to fix the bridge, how long it
will take, we will meet with the elected officials and figure out how to get the money to get
it done. This has been your KYTC Minute. For the latest information on the Sherman Minton
bridge as well as updated information, visit transportation.ky.gov.
