In this video I’m going to finish the Exercise 14
demonstration.
What I want to do now is use the Pen Tool to create
some various shapes, including this boomerang shape
here, and then I’m going to punch out a hole
in that shape. After that, I’m going to add these checkerboard
shapes. Finally, I’m going to
place this type from a different program
Illustrator . . . I’m going to get into
Photoshop
and I’m going to hide the space ship for the time being and turn
on this template for
the retro shape guide layer . . . I’m just going to use
this guide to draw the boomerang shape.
I’m going to get back into my Pen Tool
and this time, instead of doing a path, I’m going
to make a shape . . . So make sure “Shape” is selected
here.
And up here, probably by default, you
have “Auto Add/Delete”
checkmarked.
We’re going to make this shape white, so my foreground color is white.
And with the Pen Tool I’m going to click and drag from
“A” to “B” . . . “C” to “D”
Then, over here . . .
over to here . . .
and notice the shape now hides my guidelines
But I’m just going to guess and go right here . . .I’m going to come back and
fix that in a minute . . . and finish out with
“A” to “B” . . . So, with the Pen Tool I just drew
this shape, and over in your Layers panel you’ll have something
called “Shape 1” . . . You can change the name of that. I’m going to
change that to “Retro shape.”
And, for the time being, I’m going to turn the opacity down to
50% . . . So now I can see anything
that is hidden behind that boomerang.
And like with the path made with the space ship, you can edit
the path in a shape layer with this
same tool. If you go into your Direct Selection
Tool (I’m going to zoom in on this) . . .
Click on the edge of the shape and you can
grab the anchor point . . .
move it, or drag the direction
lines and move them as well if you want to edit
your shape.
Alright, so I’ve made my shape. I don’t need the
Retro Guide layer anymore -- I’m going to turn that off.
And if I want to deselect from this path
I go into the tool called “Path Selection Tool” and just click off.
Now I turn on my
space ship layer. It’s underneath the
boomerang, so I’m going to drag the Retro shape under
neath the space ship.
If I go into my Path panel there is a retro
shape path made, and if I deselect it . . .
the edge goes off
But for this next thing I’m going to do I want
to make sure that is selected, because I want to punch a punch into this
boomerang. I’m going to get back to my Layers and make sure I’m on my Retro
shape . . . and I could go back into the
Pen tool and make the
start shape to punch a hole out of the boomerang, but I’m going to
use a different tool this time. I’m going to use
what is called the Polygon tool.
right here . . . and I’m going to turn on
my guide to make that star (it’s just a circle)
Ok, I’m in the Polygon tool, and the Polygon
by default I think it starts out at five sides, and if I were to draw
out the shape it turn out into a
a regular star . . . I’m going to undo that.
So I’m going to change this polygon to have 11 sides, I
go up into the Options Bar where it says “Sides” . . . I
click “11”
then I click on this option here and make sure “Star”
is selected.
Then from the center of the circle I just click and draw
out . . . Now, that makes a white
star. That’s not what I want. I want to punch a hole through it, so I’m going to
undo that, and this time I’m going to click
this option called “Subtract Front Shape”
this option called “Subtract Front Shape”
and notice the “Minus”
sign
at the cursor. . . I click and drag and
that will punch a hole through the boomerarng.
I can turn off my guide now.
Go back into my Paths and deselect from my
path . . . Now, the next thing I want to do is add
the checkerboards.
Photoshop has some custom-made preset
shapes you can
plug in . . . Go back to where you were in the
Polygon tool . . . hold that down and go down to “Custom Shape
Tool”, click on that, then go up to
your
Option Bar and you have a number of presets.
For example, this heart . . Click on the heart
and you can make the heart . . . But we want the checkerboard
so we go into the checkerboard
and click-and-drag . . .click-and-drag
click-and-drag . . . click-and-drag.
a number of checkerboards . . .Now typically each one of those
checkerboards will come in on its own shape layer. I’m going to
select those four shape layers
I’m going to go into Layer > Merge shapes
so they’re all on one
layer.
Then I can turn the opacity of that down to 50%
or 40%.
Finally I want to place the
type from a different program. I go into
File > Place . . .
I find that file, which is called “L8Title.ai”
click on “Place”
This is
type that is coming from the program Illustrator which is a vector-based
program. I click “ok.”
Now, this type came in underneath the
space ship, so I’m just going to drag it
up here.
Hold down my Shift key and drag one of the corners and
then click my checkmark. The last thing
I want to do is rotate the space ship. I click on that layer
do a Command T, or a Control T, and get my
transform bounding box, and I rotate the
space ship.
