I am Erik Spiekermann and I meddle with Typefaces ...
and design
I got asked about my thoughts on iOS 7
I just saw it second-hand, as screenshots
on my iPad and phone
There is already a tiny shitstorm on the web
that Apple selected an ultralight Typeface
like Helvetica 25 that was intended for big font sizes
and is adjusted way too tight.
If you see a continuous text in 13px it is a nice,
but unreadable carpet
This is a phenomenon
when young graphic or industrial designers enter typography
because they focus on good-looking grey levels
They don't read, they only look at the surfaces
It's like they stick leather to a surface or metal,
that's how they regard Type.
It's really hard to read,
a catastrophe
It pearls amazingly and may look great on a retina display
But it just looks good. You just can't use it
I hope they will reconsider it
I've met Jony Ive a couple of times and
talked him out of vertical lines
Some disappeared like in the calendar app
Maybe this is my fault
I'll keep breathing down their necks,
young graphic designers love to use Helvetica
so very light that it becomes almost invisible,
its lovely pearly but...
It's Amuse-Gueule, but no dinner
