This Legislative Session Governor O'Malley and I are working on an initiative
that will extend
unemployment insurance protection to victims of domestic violence.
Domestic violence knows no boundaries. Regardless of race,
uh... ethnicity, nationality, or religion. Unfortunately domestic violence can be
found in communities throughout Maryland and, in fact, throughout our country.
We don't believe that a woman who's the victim of domestic violence, or anyone
who was the victim of domestic violence
should have to choose between
financial security and physical safety.
And sometimes, a victim of domestic violence needs to leave their job
in order to ensure their safety. And when that happens
the Governor and I believe that that person, that victim of domestic violence
ought to be eligible for unemployment insurance.
He, and more often she, are leaving that job through no fault of their own;
except for the fact that they're a victim of domestic violence.
So we're hoping General Assembly agrees with us, this year, so that Maryland can
join 32 other states that have already extended that benefit to the victims of domestic violence.
