PERSPECTIVES OF PERFECTION CHERIE SPRIGGS: IN HER OWN WORDS
I've been with Nyetimber for a little over 6 years now, and why I came here is because,
there's something really special happening in England, and the taste that we perceived
when we tried the wine was so special that, I hadn't seen it anywhere else in the world.
Brad Greatrix, he's the associate winemaker at Nyetimber, and also my husband. When Brad
and I joined the company, there were a lot of things that were absolutely fine. But what
you really need, to go from being good to being fantastic, is to nit pick about every
single detail on a day to day basis and I think the fact that Brad and I came here,
shows through in the wines by the precision and the detail that we bring into the product.
The character that our wine has, I most easily draw analogy to music. If you were to imagine
an orchestra, a lot of the flavours that we get are more the higher toned, the soprano,
alto range of flavours as it were, rather than the heavy base tones. There's an elegance
to them, there's lots of high-toned citrus characters, floral characters in the wines,
balanced by the flavours that come as a result of the aging process.
It really comes down to what you're able to achieve in your vineyards. Here in West Chiltington,
our heartland, our home it's a phenomenal environment. You have the views out to the
South Downs whose geology is fundamentally important in terms of vineyard characters
in our grapes. And, I don't know, the atmosphere, the feeling when you're here; you just know
it's the right place to grow grapes.
Eric and I developed a close and trust-filled relationship early on. It feels like a family
winery. You don't have any of the nonsense that gets in the way when you have corporate
structure and all the politics that goes with it.
I think Nyetimber has firmly established itself as a force to be reckoned with on an international
level in terms of the quality that we produce. The wines have stood side-by-side with some
of the best sparkling's in the world. If Eric and I weren't both seeking perfection, then
we wouldn't be able to take the company to where it is now.
