This is a tutorial on resetting the option to display file extensions in Windows 8.
A file extension is the suffix that follows the filename and indicates the file’s type.
In Windows, file extensions are hidden by default. However, SAS, SPSS and Stata need to see the file extension to run the set-up file.
From the Start Screen, click on Desktop. Here is a syntax file and a data file to be read into SPSS.
Let’s right-click on the icon for the data file, and left-click on Properties. We see that the filename has no file extension visible.
To display the file extension, click on File Explorer on the Taskbar.
Then click on View at the top of the window.
Click on Options and then click on the View tab.
Under Advanced Settings, look for the option, “Hide extensions for known file types.”
By default it is checked. Uncheck it. Click on Apply. Then OK.
The change takes effect immediately.
Let’s go back to the data file on the desktop, and right-click, go to Properties and left-click.
Now, we can see the filename is followed by the file extension.
