>>Theresa Bierer: Universities are seeing a shift in business as usual
Rethinking the university, fulfilling the mission in a changing environment was the
topic of a recent campus forum. The event was well attended by faculty and staff, many
who will be part of the ongoing discussions about changes in higher education.
>>President John Haeger: we know there is going to be less state money, we know there
is going to be more students, we know there is more demand for baccalaureate degrees and
so the university simply has to find a way to operate the same high quality programs
but at less cost. That's the challenge >>Bierer: The featured speaker for this forum
was Dennis Jones, president of the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems.
He says the changes that need to be made at universities are not a question of technical
knowhow but of political will. >>Dennis Jones: You know it's hard in an institution
that's been a very good institution doing what it has been doing for a long time. That
says "we succeeded by doing business the way we currently do business, why should we change?"
Well I don't think there is a choice but to change
>>Bierer: Jones believes that now is the time to make tough choices, before institutions
are forced to make changes. The national education expert says it is possible
to meet the growing demand for education while maintaining core values.
