My name is Derek Chang,
I’m from Taiwan.
I’m studying medicine in Québec City.
I want to work in international health,
which is what I’m doing now, then I’m going on an internship in Honduras
for 3 months.
Studying in Québec is an asset,
because it’s a chance to discover another culture,
and learn how to adapt to a new environment.
The faculty of medicine offers tremendous support,
there are so many possibilities and things to do,
and people are open to new ideas.
The program is demanding, there’s a lot of work,
and the professors have very high expectations.
The professors say: that’s very good,
but you should always strive for more,
they encourage us to push the limits.
Québec City is the real thing.
It’s not like Montréal, which is very multicultural, and I love that…
But that’s Montréal, not Québec City.
Music is an intrinsic part of my life,
it’s the first thing I do every morning,
as soon as I get up, it’s one of the pleasures of life.
I’d like to practise my French more,
and live in a French-speaking milieu for a long time,
to get to know the mentality,
to see the world through the eyes of a francophone.
I recommend Québec as a place to study,
because it’s not like France,
or Canada, or the United States.
Things are efficient and well organized.
People have kept the French art of living,
people eat well, enjoy life, know how to have fun.
The fact that I spoke French
made my integration so much easier,
and my stay in Québec so much richer.
