On behalf of expertvillage.com I'm Bob Copeland. We are discussing the portraits of jazz and
blues musicians that I do in series of painting. This particular piece is the largest piece
that I have done, it is the one of the great trumpeter Louie Armstrong from New Orleans,
Louisiana. He has probably has been the largest influence on all the subsequent of the trumpet
players in the world today right up to the top of the line by Wynton Marsalis of today.
He influenced all them, I have always wanted to do something of him. His signature smile
called shasmo which was short of satchel mouth that is was a name that he was given by his
fellowed musicians. His other signature was when he would be doing a concert he had a
big white handkerchief that he would wipe his valve with and wipe his horn. He also
had a raspy wispy voice and he would sing and play in tunes like in Hello Dolly and
he is known for that. This was I guess, this was a tribute to them not only to Louie Armstrong
but to jazz group of what we know are jazz music today. We would figure out this trumpet
out in the bottom I don't want to give too much detail. I begin with a thought that I
would do the entire trumpet then I decided that I would only do part of it and not to
take away, you know he had a big smile so the teeth and the eyes and the grin where
that was Louie Armstrong always happy. Always loving what he was doing and I didn't want
to do anything that would have been distract from that.
