But I remember thinking about it and talking about it to people about it and talking to
law enforcement to people, we didn't have any equipment. I believe Bill, we had one
teletype and one amateur radio and uh and we had a sheriffs radio that was in our office.
We were in the basement of the jail. And I apologized to these people and to the victims,
uh to the people that were the victims that particular night. We didn't have anything
that we could warn you with. We didn't have anything that uh back then that we could educate
you to the fact of what was taking place. Today we have that. We've come a long ways
in 30 years. Uh, from uh being able to communicate back and forth with the National Weather Service,
uh, with communications with each departments and so forth, so, we have come a long ways.
But that particular night we couldn't help you and it was total chaos. And the people
of Athens and Limestone county came together and we survived, with the exception, I think
, of 18 people, I believe it was 18 people that was killed that night in Limestone county.
