>>Theresa Bierer transitioning to a University setting can be challenging for many college
students but it can be especially challenging for former active duty military members. As
inside NAU's Nancy Harrison reports, NAU has a new program to help those students.
>>Nancy Harrison: When graduate student Erik Stanfield left the navy and came to NAU about
4 years ago he needed a little help. >>Erik Stanfield: without somebody to show
you, to kind of lead you through the process it really would be impossible.
>>Harrison: Veterans like Stanfield, often need help navigating the military funding
structure, finding counseling and other basics like medical insurance and housing. And after
he got the assistance he needed, he took a job to help other incoming Vets.
>>Stanfield: I have an opportunity help other students use their benefits and get a college
education. >>Harrison: the student veteran center is
located here, at the extended campus facility and without this program many of the veterans
may not get the services they need to graduate. >>LTC Andrew Griffin: The average veteran
nationwide coming out of the military and starting at the college level, only 3-6% will
actually graduate with a 4 year degree in 5 years or less.
>>Harrison: So as soon as an administrator learns a Veteran has been admitted to NAU,
the work begins, the department helps students on campus and those throughout the state.
>>Griffin: The toughest time for them is that first to second semester.
>>Harrison: Veterans from all military branches are encouraged to contact the center and when
they do they'll get help from other vets who understand their needs. For Inside NAU I'm
Nancy Harrison >>Bierer: The newly formed Office of Student
Affairs is continuing to evolve to meet the changing needs of students.
