Hi.
My name is Katie Rasila.
I'm a hematologist/oncologist with Sutter Medical Group.
And I practice out of Vacaville and Fairfield.
I was brought up in a small town in India with not a lot
of health care and resources.
And I really knew, even when I was younger, that I wanted to
grow up to be a doctor.
And one thing that stuck with me was my grandfather had an
accident and died when I was really young.
And it was really due to lack of health care.
And so that really stuck with me.
The main thing I like about oncology is really the bond
that you form with your patients.
I feel that oncology is special, because you're
dealing with patients who have a lot of serious illnesses and
are going through a very tough time in their lives.
And you do form a really strong bond with them and are
able to help them.
The other thing I find that is that it is a challenging field
with a a lot of research being done and a lot of new
treatments coming on board, which does make it a lot more
exciting as well.
The main reason I moved to California
was because of family.
However, the reason I chose SMG is because I feel that you
get the best of both worlds.
I've been in academics before I joined here.
It's a large group practice with access to all
specialties.
Everybody is very easily accessible.
There's teamwork, electronic health records.
And pretty much all services are
available within the system.
I think when I was younger, what I envisioned being a
doctor is obviously a lot different than what it really
turns out to be in the sense that it does take a lot longer
than when you think as a child.
But it is very rewarding.
And it is a lot more fulfilling than you
realize as a kid.
So I think that I am in the right profession and I made
the right decision.
