Hi guys, I'm Roberto. Welcome to this episode of Vlogservations.
For today's topic: Twinkiepocalypse! So this past Friday, Hostess announced it's
closing its plants and liquidating its assets, which means no more Twinkies, no more Ho-Ho's,
no more Ding-Dongs, no more Wonder Bread, etc.
This is sad news, especially for the 18,500 employees who are now out of a job, right
when a union representing 6,100 of them was demanding better benefits.
Was it worth it? But the news spread like wildfire and the
Internet really didn't disappoint. People were tweeting about it, posting creepy
videos about their love for Twinkies, posting DIY recipes for how to make your own Twinkies,
really? I thought one of the main benefits of Twinkies
was precisely the convenience of not having to bake them.
And of course, trying to sell Twinkies as if they were actual bars of gold.
But this one is my all-time favorite. There is an online petition at whitehouse.gov
asking President Obama to give Hostess a Twinkie bailout.
Well, who am I to judge. It worked for the automotive industry, it
worked for the banks, so why can't it work for sweet and creamy cakes?
I don't think that'll ever happen but I can't fault these people for trying.
People have gone nuts stockpiling on Twinkies as if they were going to help you survive
the zombie apocalypse. BUY ALL THE TWINKIES!
People acting all crazy like the Mayan calendar predicted the extinction of Twinkies, we should
all chill the hell out. If we bothered to read the new articles in
their entirety we would know that Hostess is going to sell their brands to the highest
bidder. They are actually going to have a court-supervised
auction for that. So someone else is going to end up buying
the Hostess brands and it's going to continue making Twinkies, Ho Ho's, Ding-Dongs, etc,
etc, etc. But Roberto, that's not even for sure!
Whoever buys them might change the recipe or might just kill them off completely.
Listen to me carefully. With all the attention this issue has gathered
any company with a sane corporate mind is going to capitalize on it.
So rest assured that there are going to be Twinkies for years to come.
In the meantime, if you're feeling adventurous, I guess you can try one of those homemade
Twinkie recipes. Or we can all survive with the store-brand
clones that are already out there. Or you can pay 100 bucks or a 1000 bucks per
Twinkie on eBay. But the question of the hour: Which Hostess
product are you going to miss the most? At least until some other company buys them
and starts making them again. For me it's going to be the Hostess cupcakes.
