Hi, I'm Ben Model, silent film accompanist and historian,
and this is "Accidentally Preserved. Our next film is
"The Lost Laugh" starring Wallace Lupino, released in 1928.
Now, this is a film I turned up some years ago on eBay.
It was actually listed as a Bobby Dunn
short, but there were several frame grabs from the film
on the listing and I instantly recognized Wallace from his appearances
supporting his brother
Lupino Land and his comedy shorts. The film was
missing its main title and credits, but I sent the link to the eBay listing to my
friend Steve *** who --
from looking at the images and doing some quick research --
was able to identify the film as "The Lost Laugh", which --
-- until I turned it up -- was also a lost film. It's a delightful
little short, and one of the standout sequences for me anyway
is a sequence at the beginning where Wallace tries desperately to make toast
in a toaster.
It's fun, because of the timing and the snap
that the speed of silent film gives it. Also this film, remember, was released in
1928
which was also the year that machine sliced bread hit the market.
Remember to visit accidentallypreserved.com where you can read Steve ***'s
film notes on this film
and where there's also a link to buy the Accidentally Preserved
DVD. Thanks for tuning in --
this coming Wednesday, it's "The Lost Laugh" starring Wallace Lupino.
