Hi my name is Yves Singletary and I'm the Massachusetts Promise Fellow serving in AmeriCorps
at the Boston Public Health Commission. I serve because being from Boston working with
young people is not only an investment in the young people it's also an investment in
our community and in investment in our future. Growing up in Boston I understand the challenges
that come with being a young person in Boston even though growing up the times were different
some of the challenges still exist for young people and so it means even more for me to
be serving in Boston and being able to connect young people to different resources in the
community that exist . I had some wonderful role models in my life, my parents who were
really supportive of me and being a supportive caring adult in someone else's life is amazing,
and through the fellowship and AmeriCorps being able to travel to different high schools
and middle schools and work with young people and be that role model for them is really
impactful. Just letting them know that they can overcome those challenges they are facing
in their life currently, and letting them know they do have the power to make a difference
and they do have control over their futures. And being in AmeriCorps has provided me that
great experience, being able to connect with young people but also connecting with different
organizations and other people doing this amazing work and really creating a web of
support so that young people in the City of Boston can thrive. So one of the greatest
feelings when working with people and especially young people isn't the moment you know they
have the potential to be great but the moment that person realizes they have the potential
to be great and through service I've had a lot of those moments and its really inspiring
and keeps me going every day and I've been fortunate through service to not only find
you know a job that I enjoy doing but also I've found more then that I've found my career
path and that's definitely working with young people and supporting my community.
