All this labour will soon help mothers through their own. On September 12, the doors will open
to the Women and Babies Program.
This artist's rendering shows two soon-to- be bright and beautiful floors stretching
out over one hundred and twenty thousand square feet,
a massive improvement in form and function compared to the cramped and outdated space on
Grenville Street. "We're tripping over each other, you have to put up screens. This new space will allow
parents to just spend their time with their baby,
and to have the private time to be with their baby, without us or anybody else interfering,
which will be great
for families." While it's still in the construction phase, the design puts families front-and-centre,
and, in fact, families were consulted during the design process.
That means rooms are big and bright
and low-risk women can labour, birth and recover all in one of twenty such rooms, no moving required.
This space will also house a 23-bed high-risk pregnancy unit for women who have
complications and need in-patient care, three surgery suites for women requiring c-sections,
and a neonatal intensive care unit, large enough to care for 48 babies.
Each baby will have their own individual space, and parents will be able to stay with their
newborns in rooms where they have their own entrance. And there's more, including a 25-bed
maternal and newborn unit, a high-risk ambulatory clinic and a neonatal follow-up
clinic. The facilities here will be simply remarkable. And when this project is complete,
both floors will feel very spa-like, with warm soothing colours, and comfortable furniture.
Electric fireplaces will be located in the NICU family support area and early labour
lounge in triage. This project is on budget and on schedule,
good news for more than 4000 families
who will welcome their new addition in Sunnybrook's latest addition.
