Captain Kirk
You interfere with me
you'll change history.
Stop it!
Stop it!
What are you?
In there!
Malfunctioning. Rocket is deviating from programmed flight path.
You can destroy it, of course.
If we can't, we'll land an H-bomb on somebody somewhere.
Computers indicate an impact
somewhere in the heart of the Euro-Asian continent.
Get me the president.
Roberta, you've got to let me finish what I started,
or World War III will begin in six minutes.
------------------------------ Opening Comments Leonard Nimoy (1999) ------------------------------
The spin-off has been a staple of the television industry
since it began in the early fifties.
"Love, American Style"
gave birth to "Happy Days,"
which, in turn, spun off
both "Laverne & Shirley"
and "Mork & Mindy."
"All in the Family" spawned "Maude," the "Jeffersons,"
and "Good Times."
'Star Trek' has had successful spin-offs
in "The Animated Series,"
"Star Trek: The Next Generation,"
"Deep Space Nine," and "Voyager. "
But before all of them,
'Star Trek' tried one spin-off that never,
well... spun off.
The last episode of Star Trek's second season
was intended to become a brand-new series,
a blend of science fiction with "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."
And a little bit of James Bond thrown in for good measure.
It was called "Assignment: Earth."

Kirk voice over: Captain's Log --
Using the light speed breakaway factor,
the Enterprise has moved back through time
to the 20th century.
We are now in extended orbit around Earth,
using our ship's deflector shields
to remain unobserved.
Our mission -- historical research.
We are monitoring Earth communications
to find out how our planet survived desperate problems
in the year ... 1968.
Alert status.
Force shields on maximum.
Leslie, begin sensor scan.
Transporter room to captain.
Kirk here. What's happening?
It appears we have accidentally intercepted
someone's transporter beam, Captain.
It's incredibly powerful.
It's impossible.
The 20th century had no such --
Captain, something is beaming aboard this vessel.
I'll be right there.
The beam is originating
at least 1,000 light years away.
No transporter beam can reach that far,
not even in our century!
Something's shaking us apart.
It's locked, sir. It's left our circuits wide open.
You're right.
Something is beaming aboard.

INSIGHTS: She was the cat's meow
You're asking me to remember something
that was in another lifetime.
"Assignment: Earth" was the cat.
And they didn't want to use a real cat's voice
because there was such a range of emotions
that this cat went through.
It was almost human.
Are you jealous, Isis?
It's most unbecoming.
Babcock: So that's why they picked a human being to do her,
and that was lots of fun.
Would you mind telling me who that is?
That, Miss Lincoln, is simply my cat.
Your cat?
Babcock: And then I also did the computer in that,
I think, the woman who was
the computer voice.
Computer: Incomplete...
but sufficient.
Babcock: To be hired to play an animal
was the most exciting thing of all.
Oh, thank you, Isis. I'll be...
right in.
Babcock: I don't think I've ever-
oh, I just did an elephant,
a matriarch of a herd,
for a documentary.
End of INSIGHTS
"ASSIGNMENT: EARTH"
Why have you intercepted me?
Careful, Isis.
All right.
Captain Kirk, my name is Gary Seven.
I am a human being from the 20th century.
I was on my way....
Humans of the 20th century
do not go beaming around the galaxy, Mr. Seven.
I've been living on another planet far more advanced.
I was beaming to Earth when you intercepted me.
The location of that planet?
They wish their existence kept secret.
Even in your time, it will remain unknown.
It's impossible to hide a whole planet.
Impossible for you. Not for them.
I am of this time period. You are not.
You interfere with me with what I have to do there,
and you'll change history.
You'll destroy the Earth ...
and probably yourselves, too.
If what he says is true, Captain,
every second we delay him could be dangerous.
And if he's lying ...
this is the most critical period in Earth's history.
The planet I'm from wants to help Earth survive.
What if it turns out
you're an invading alien from the future?

Engines are on full reverse, and they're buckling!
I'm James Doohan,
and you're watching 'Star Trek'

Computer, record the following.
Unless agents are found immediately,
I must undertake their mission.
INSIGHTS: I Love This Stuff...
I know that ever since I was a child,
I've loved science fiction.
I used to write science fiction
when I was a kid.
It is the last frontier, except for the brain,
the kind of brain research we're doing now.
But at that time, in the sixties,
it seemed to be the last great exploration was space,
and there was something very romantic
and adventurous about that.

Half Time Comments Leonard Nimoy
It was intended that this new series would focus on the advenres
of a mysterious Gary Seven
and his human secretary,
Roberta Lincoln.
Robert Lansing was cast
in the role of Gary Seven,
and in her first major acting role,
the part of Roberta Lincoln was played by a very young Teri Garr.
Teri would later go on to stardom
in such films as "Close Encounters of the Third Kind,"
"Mr. Mom," and "Tootsie."

INSIGHTS:
Fontana: I think this show
talked to people
Through the characters.
We reached out to the audience
through those 3 major actors-
Deforest Kelley and Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner-
And through the stories we were trying to tell,
which are universal kinds of stories.
They're stories that speak to the heart.
They talk about love, they talk about friendship,
they talk about loyalty, they talk about patriotism,
exploration, curiosity, reaching out.
And I think all those things still touch people,
even when you look at a 30-Year-Old show.
Shut up!

It is difficult to know which is best, Captain.
by the earth ship from the future ...
the mission was completed.
Correction, Mr. Seven.
It appears we did not interfere.
The Enterprise was part of what was supposed to happen
- on this day in 1968.
Our record tapes show, although not generally revealed,
on this date, a malfunctioning suborbital warhead
was exploded exactly 104 miles above the Earth.
So everything happened the way it was supposed to.
And you'll be pleased our records show
that it resulted in a stronger international agreement
against the use of such weapons.
Would you mind telling me who that is?
That, Miss Lincoln, is simply my cat.
Your cat?
What else do your record tapes show?
I'm afraid we can't reveal everything we know,
Mr. Seven.
We could say that Mr. Seven and Miss Lincoln
have some interesting experiences in store.
I think we could say that.
Two to beam up, Scotty.
Live long and prosper, Mr. Seven.
Same to you, Miss Lincoln. Energize.

Closing Comments Leonard Nimoy
Even though Kirk and Spock hint at the many adventures
that lie in ste for Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln,
we never got to see any of them.
The spin-off never happened.
And Star Trek's second season
ended on a disappointing note.
With ratings faltering,
NBC announced the cancellation of the series.
A letter-writing campaign
organized by fans and science fiction writers
convinced the network to renew the series for a third season.
Unfortunately, they put us in the unenviable 10:00 P. M.
Friday night time slot
and slashed our production budget.
Within a year, it would prove to be the death knell
for the original series.
Before that would happen,
Star Trek 's third season would produce a few of the best
and some of the worst episodes of the entire series.
But that's a story for later.
