The work doesn’t end at the end of the trip the work continues here for them in terms
of their own exploration and understanding of what the trip means to them and how they
can continue to make changes in the future.
Just talking with everyone I know about look this is what I saw, see my pictures, and here’s
what you can do or do you want to do this with me kind of thing. For me I like I am
into the grassroots efforts.
You have to find a way to sustain the passion. I think the best way for us to do that is
to be a part of a group and to maintain those connections. So even when the trip is done,
you know, we still when we see each other in the hallways, we give each other hugs and
ask what’s going on and how is life treating you and how are you dealing with the things
that you know that really change the way you look at life, how is that going for you.
While I don’t have a lot to give I can give myself and I can give my presence and I can
give the gifts I have, so I can raise awareness when I come back about what is going on there.
One of the faculty here was saying that when students come back from New Orleans and they
begin to contribute in class about their experiences it changes the whole tenure of the class because
they are speaking from a place of knowing in a way the didn’t before they left. So
they are able to take theory and make it real.
You learn that that’s a part of the profession and that is a part of being human. That is
just a part of humanity you learn things that change you and there’s no way to get around
that.
