There are two different types of floor lamps: Floor lamps and torchieres. Although they
both have a similar look and are often confused with one another, they do serve different
purposes for home lighting. Floor lamps are typically used to directly illuminate the
task at hand, like reading or writing. Often times the floor lamp points downward as direct
light or they're multi-directional. Multi-directional lamps can be twisted and turned or they hang
over to shine its light downward. A torchiere is tall lamp in which the light shines upward.
Torchieres are great for ambient and accent light. They can be the perfect addition to
large living rooms where one corner may be missing out on the general lighting and needs
some brightening up. Floor Lamps have a distinctive long and skinny physique which makes them
easier to knock over. Hot light bulbs, such as the Halogen bulb, can easily lead to fires
or cause burn damage, so make sure that floor lamps are secure in the home and are kept
away from curtains and other loose materials. Floor lamps and torchieres are usually between
60 and 78 inches tall. We recommend measuring how high your ceiling is before choosing a
lamp height to be sure the lamp isn't so close to the ceiling that it ends up heating
a small discoloration in the ceiling. The first thing to look for is a Sturdy Base:
Because of the proportions of a floor lamp-tall and skinny it can be easy to end up with a
wobbly lamp. Generally you will be able to judge the sturdiness of a floor lamp by simply
looking at the base and comparing it to the shade it is supporting. Lamp shades greatly
affect the light that is put out, so make sure to find the floor lamp with the shade
that best suits your needs. For higher brightness and uniform lighting, you need shades with
better transparency, a wider diameter and a shorter height. If this is your goal, consider
light linen or cotton shades. For low and ambient light, the shade can be more opaque
and narrower. Silk and darker linen shades will work best. If you need to direct the
light for reading or other general tasks parchment paper shades with golden or silver lining
work great. Floor lamps will be compatible with a variety of light bulbs, so double check
while shopping if there is a particular type of light bulb you prefer to use, such as incandescent
or CFL. When shopping for your floor lamp, consider the finish of the lamp. Matching
the finish of the lamp with any existing finishes in your home, such as door knobs and handles,
will greatly enhance your décor. ATG Stores.com carries over 3,000 different floor lamps in
a wide variety of styles. And with careful selection, you'll find the perfect floor lamp
