it seems to me as a perfect example of managing complexity
there has been a difficult clash of backgrounds,
culture, even of languages
a group of people has been projected in a situation
that may appear easy at first look
but where, in fact,
must get to a synthesis-possibly a highly intellectual one-through
a clash of personalities if needed,
in order to achieve a result
all this in a rather short time…
it is somehow a paradigm of the times we are living in...
the didactic of design has a tradition of approaches
where this kind of formula,
all basically deriving for the idea of the workshop…
this is a solid tradition in the field
the full immersion method results being highly motivating
either for the students and for the teaching staff
the idea of a group of young people from different countries:
Spain, Great Britain, Greece and Italy,
that didn't know each other,
get togehter and in a two-week and a half time
can not only get familiar to each other,
but even design and get to work on different grounds:
animation, graphic design and most of all
- on the communication side,
splitting into groups on different projects
it's an idea that has a strong tradition,
but that I find here extremely well developed.
This model has a variety of declinations,
what I can say is that when you put into play
some of the factors that we find here:
a high degree of mobility and of internationalization,
a series of objective that unfold gradually,
the fact that you don't have a predefined script
and fixed goals …
this aspect of a creativity brainstorming
is undoubtedly among the elements
that characterize this experience
incorporating it in the extended family
of design education experiences.
voglio dire, quando sei all'università
nessuno mi è venuto a dire:
At a first glance a perfect sort of an intellectual ground…
on the track - if I can say so - of the Renaissance workshop model:
you don't feel the pressure of the need of a payback,
to be achieved instantly and at all costs…
The atmosphere appears to me as very lively
and close to something where mobility,
involvement and participation are the keywords.
My impression is that, in this respect,
things are going exactly as they had been planned.
A homogeneity and a fine tuning
among the group's members
that I personally find rather extraordinary
for what deals with the production of information
things have basically unchanged
information exists, it always existed…
the question is how it gets redistributed how the shift has occurred.
We have gone through three key steps:
one is about memory,
one is related with the printed paper
and now there's internet
Recently I visited a photographic exhibit about Elenora Duncan.
An article in which Orio Vergani,
a famous italian journalist of the '30's,
reporting about Eleonora's death, was on display…
It was almost like a film script:
at that time newspapers where the key popular communication tool,
they had to describe events in great detail,
like in a novel, with a high literary value…
Imagine a similar new today on TV, on the radio…
all the event's pictures would probably be already on the internet…
possibly with fan's posts on a blog,
twitter or on another social network….
we can see how the way news are distributed
has radically changed in this third revolution
Some say that because of the web,
google and of computers
we humans have lost the skill of memory.
In ancient times there where the greek aoidos 'singers',
who could learn by hearth the great poems.
Today we don't even know how to memorize a sonnet.
At the same time we know how to do other things,
that project us into the new dimension of the distribution of ideas…
it is the velocity and multiplicity…
another aspect that I believe the IP has been dealing with.
The design of animations comes into play
either as a tool for describing the results,
and-this is even more interesting,
also from a disciplinary standpoint
becomes part of the design process itself.
An area of animation that I find very interesting,
something about we had an understanding,
but that hadn't been studied and investigated yet,
in Italy and Europe, to this level of depth.
it is indeed interesting as usually,
when we speak about animation,
we mean entertainment, sometimes commercials.
This is a discipline that today in my opinion displays a strong potential,
thanks to new technologies
either in image production with digital animation
and today's easy access to them,
and in terms of the actual image and communication diffusion
via not only TV, but web, mobile phone, …
What I can say - connected with what I said earlier - is that
as it's an open process
that may incorporate contradictions along its path
…that is not linear,
it can have moments of negative feedback
…new starts, new stops that then get solved
…it's a process that by its nature incorporates contradictions...
I like the idea that the process
through which you get to a result
counts more than the results itself…
although, from my point of view,
some of the results have been very interesting…
as in the case of the micro-credit project
or of the Posidonia one
In other cases the result has been less focused,
but again, in situations like this
what really counts is the human atmosphere,
the motivation,
the capacity to develop teamwork methodologies…
the workshop process is also extremely important
another key issue is the extraordinary human component
that comes into play...
a group of students with their teachers
…and the idea of a connection between European young people
…it's very positive, motivating.
It would be fantastic if this could become a permanent project,
in the track of graphical animation…
…e ora stanno andando molto bene….
i ragazzi possono ancora fare molto,
tutti saranno piacevolmente sorpresi:
proprio a quest'area professionale
I also liked the fact that
a series of potential 'clients' were selected,
clearly from the non-profit sector.
This has undoubtedly motivated the students
as they come from the real world.
The actual design expectations have been
highly motivating for the group work …
the design is very nice on the graphic respect
this is a design School I presume it couldn't be otherwise
- i believe that there is a missing part,
probably as this is a 'work in progress' experiment'…
if the web site has to be the main window on the project
at the moment we are missing the actual 'product'
the final result
…any final judgement will be necessarily based on the final product,
at the moment this is still missing.
…i ragazzi devono lavorare,
e l'ultima cosa che vogliono è qualcuno che arriva a chiedere
'ciao! mi mostrate cosa state facendo?
The chance, not only for the teaching staff and for the lecturers,
but for the people involved in the Program,
to get familiar with the themes
and with the set up is essential,
I believe that in this respect
the material made available
through the user area of the website was extremely useful.
Another extraordinarily useful fact
is that all the reference material,
as well as the developments of the projects
goes on-line in real time,
allowing who's involved to have an updated picture…
this was not only useful but has had a clear impact
on the learning process itself.
It is beautiful that all this is happening in Alghero and in Sardinia,
and here I am not only referring to the IP workshop,
but generally for the atmosphere of the whole Design course here,
…all is happening in a place that is apparently isolated
but in fact potentially very easily connected
with the rest of Europe.
