I received letter from the city regarding the backwater valve. I'm just wondering why do I need backwater valve and how does backwater valve work.
Customer questions us what is the backwater valve. In this episode we will clear what is backwater valve. Why you should you have one? Customer questions us what is the backwater valve. In this episode we will clear what is backwater valve. Why you should you have one?
Here we have standard indoor backwater valve.
This end connects to city drain
city portion drain
this portion connects to the building drain
out from your toilets
This portion is called the flapper, as you can see the flapper in in the open position.
Remember back in July we had that terrible rain storm and a lot of
customers had sewer backups from city pipe. Now I am going to explain to you what happens
with backwater valve when city sewer system gets overloaded
and push the sewer towards your house, this is where the water is coming "IN" and catching
this flapper, pushing the straight "UP" and
locking it to protect you house.
The backwater valve should be maintain on a regular basis.
To take the cover off, unscrew those 2 black bolts,
and set the cover on a side
Take clean-out cap OFF
and set it on a side. Any time we have heavy rains
or a lot of melting snow, it is a good time to check
the backwater valve. Right now flapper is up
only because it is demonstration on a table
normally you will find it in this position from your house
meaning that flapper is
in a neutral position
Easiest way to clean out you backwater valve is take the garden hose
What you don't want is your flapper sitting at rest
flesh out the inside what you don't
is for the flapper for to be sitting and rest
on any debris inside the mechanism
Backwater valve can ONLY PROTECT you
so much. In the city of Toronto approximately 80% of the house have
combined sewer system
Combined system is sewer and storm pipe using one pipe
together as one pipe
protect your basement you NEED to install sump pump
and sump pit to take ground water and discharges away from the house foundation
I hope that little information will be helpful to you.
