Hi guys, welcome to Scare U. I'm Dr. Margee Kerr - Scare Specialist at The ScareHouse
Like the song says, let's start at the very beginning...
let's start with fear and our brain and how it's evolution impacts the way we respond
What is fear? What's happening when our palms start to sweat
and our heart starts to race?
why do we scream
and feel the urge to flee?
The answers to these questions start with our brain and our great great great great...
great great great great great great great great great great great great
great great great great...
... our ancestors.
Our ancestors of five million years ago had a brain mass that was about
400 cubic centimeters
today our brain mass is about fourteen hundred cubic centimeters
bigger brains mean we can think
and rationalize about fear in more complex ways.
That initial startle, or the fight or flight response,
is an old trait that evolved over centuries ago
in a future episode,
we'll break down the fear response. But now, let's look at what happened to our
ancestors that makes us react the way we do.
imagine two cavemen walking out in the wild on the hunt for food
all of the sudden .. A bear appears! And the two men have 2 different reactions.
One ran...
One didn't...
One survived...
and one didn't.
the one who felt the impulse to run survived to tell his story
His brain sent a powerful message to his body that s**t was about to go down
and he better get out of there fast.
that impulse kept him alive
and those traits were passed down through generations
keeping us alive too... So thanks grandpa!
and thank you for watching SCARE U. Be sure to subscribe to The ScareHouse
