Hello everyone, my name is impaKt and I've got another quick tip for you.
With the gold income increase for supports, we started seeing less Gold per 10 quints
and more Flat HP ones. Each one gives you 26 HP, so that pretty much sums up to a total
of 78 HP on runes alone. Meaning before patch 4.3, you could start with 178 HP and 10 HP
Regen.
So why was the shield nerf-worthy? For starters, it's a huge amount of extra health to have
at level 1 but that's not even the problem. The 10 HP Regen gave you an incredible amount
of sustain in lane which would make poke-based supports almost useless. HP Regen is THE stat
you want to have when facing damage over-time, while flat HP and resistances are mandatory
when facing all-in lanes and comps.
If you're looking for perspective, consider the potion comparison. An HP pot will give
you 150 Health over 15 seconds, meaning you'll get 50 HP per 5 seconds. Doran's shield gave
you a fifth of that amount which doesn't sound like much BUT it is a starting item that doesn't
require you to spend extra money on. Plus, if you add the Perseverance mastery to that,
which will regenerate 1% of missing health every 5 seconds, you'd get an incredible amount
of sustain for such a low cost.
However, the shield did get nerfed in patch 4.3. It is still a very good item and still
grants good value for it's cost. Even though the HP and HP Regen stats were tuned down,
the block passive is still there and it's still very significant against auto attacking
lanes. If you're wondering if going Flat HP quints and doran's shield is a good start,
let me tell you: it is.
The reason for this video however, is the ruby crystal cost reduction. So here's my
suggestion: if you're facing a lane that isn't that dependant on auto attacks, consider this.
Ruby crystal gives you 150 HP at level one, which is 8 HP less than the doran's shield
and flat HP quints combo. So try swapping your Flat HP Quints for HP Regen ones. You'll
lose the extra 78 HP that we talked about, but you'll gain 2.7 HP per 5 with each one.
That's a total of 8.1 HP per 5 at level 1.
So here's the comparison - the ruby crystal and hp regen quint start gives you 150 HP,
8.1 HP Regen at level 1, while the doran's shield will give you 158 HP, 6 HP Regen and
the block passive. Since the ruby crystal doesn't cost as much as the shield though,
you'll be able to get an extra HP potion which will surely help you out with the lack of
the block passive early on.
Plus, by doing this you're working on your build from the get-go. You'll be able to get
Sightstone on your first trip back to the base which can pretty much snowball the lane.
Getting a Sightstone early means you can swap your warding totem for a sweeping lens which
will not only help you avoid getting ganked, but it will also allow you to keep bush control.
It effectively helps you zone out your opponents and snowball the lane in your favor.
Once again, both starting paths are viable and not just for Support Players, but I do
think there's a lot of value in the Ruby Crystal start now that shouldn't be neglected.
