Welcome to the South Cumberland Library, a branch of the Allegany County Library System.
Located at 100 Seymour Street in Cumberland, MD, the current South Cumberland Library was dedicated on December 12, 1982.
The building occupies 9000 square feet, with 110 linear feet facing Seymour Street.
A second entrance and parking lot are located at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and East 1st Street.
There is a drop box next to this entrance to allow borrowed library materials to be returned even when the library is closed.
Let’s go inside here.
In the entrance lobby, display cases and bulletin boards highlight library materials and services, as well as community-related events.
To the right are the doors to the library and the Community Room.
Let’s take a look inside the Community Room.
The Community Room can hold 45 people and is available for use by nonprofit groups when not being used for library programming.
See a library staff member or fill out an online form to request a Community Room reservation.
Upon entering the library, you will see a central aisle that divides the building in half.
Directly across from you is the front entrance onto Seymour Street.
Turning left, you will see this view of the adult reading area.
The Circulation Desk will be on your immediate left.
Here you can get return materials you have previously borrowed or ask for assistance from a library staff member.
Beyond the Circulation Desk, a bank of public access computers are available for use for one hour each day with an Allegany County Library card.
Behind the computer stations, you will find DVDs, video games, and Blu-ray discs available for check out at no cost for one week.
Next to the computers, there are tables for group study, tutoring, or quiet reading.
New adult fiction and nonfiction books are displayed on the right hand wall next to the Seymour Street entrance.
In the reading area next to the shelf of new books, you can find your favorite genre of paperback books…
or pick up a current magazine to flip through or a back issue to check out and take home with you.
Moving farther into the room, personal research carrels divide the two rows of adult bookshelves.
The shelves on the left contain large-print fiction books...
nonfiction books, organized into subjects using the Dewey Decimal System...
and biographies.
The shelves on the right contain fiction books, organized alphabetically by authors’ last names.
Returning to the Circulation Desk and crossing the central aisle, we enter the children’s area.
On your right, you will see the Teen Space, where local teens can find books published specifically for them, including anime and manga titles.
There are also two computers designated for teen use and a reading area for hanging out.
Past the teen area, you can find chapter books for pre-teens, and the children’s nonfiction collection.
Along the far wall, there are two computers reserved for use by children age twelve and under, as well as the children’s catalog computer.
Children’s picture books are on the left side of the room, alphabetized by authors’ last names.
Introduce a child to the joy of reading today!
The colorful children’s reading area also provides room for respectful play in a fun and safe environment.
Moving back toward the central aisle, you will pass shelves containing children’s audiobooks, DVDs, and music CDs…
everything you need to keep the little one entertained on a long road trip.
This brings us back to the Circulation Desk.
We hope you have enjoyed your virtual visit.
