I'm Sheri Fritz and I'm a climate detective.
I'm what's called a paleo-climatologist
or a paleo-ecologist so I'm interested in the
history of climate and the history of
ecological systems. In the past we've been able
to document these mega-droughts which are much
longer in duration than anything we've seen in the
19th and 20th Century. I get to travel to all sorts
of parts of the world. In Thailand, it's a project
that's aimed at reconstructing the history
of the Asian monsoons. And so by studying the past
we hope we have a more complete understanding
of how the system works and how resilient it is.
And that, in turn, will help us in managing the
unknown future. We certainly need to minimize
our use of water to every extent that we can
and develop systems that are adaptive and
flexible enough that they can change as climate changes.
