We wanna make it easier and safer for kids to walk and cycle to school.
It has massive health benefits for our kids, but it also has benefits for cities because
it reduces traffic congestion around schools. Twenty years ago, more than half of our kids
were walking and cycling to school. Now that's dropped to less than a third, and it's because
the roads just aren't safe enough. We can make it safter with a small investment
of money. So we're going to put fifty million dollars
a year for four years in to a program so schools and communities can have better, safer infrastructure
and more kids can walk or cycle safely to school.
"Would you rather come by bike than get dropped off in the car?"
Yeah - Yeah. "Why would you rather that?"
It's much for fun and going in the car isn't very good for the environment.
"Yeap?" And sometimes there's quite a lot of traffic
in cars. So when you're biking it's just quicker. Yeah!
So we launched our school hubs policy earlier in the year which has a 'school hubs facilitator'
in a school, and their job will be in part to work with the school community and the
local council to develop a transport plan that provides for safer cycling and walking.
They'll also coordinate services like the walking buses and supervise bike squads for
kids and the training for children on the school site about cycling safety & walking
safety. So these are integrated plans - Safe to School
and the School Hubs work very well together to improve safety for our kids, improve safety
for our families, and to reduce congestion on our roads.
