SPEAKER 1: Welcome to our first week of Library Advocacy Unshushed.
As we will see this week, effective library advocacy rests on some
principles, and some values, and assumptions.
First, great librarianship is transformative.
In the first video, we're going to share some stories of libraries that
are truly embedded in their communities and bonded with their
community's aspirations, which is where the transformative impacts
really come from.
In the second video, we're going to be looking at the deep and ageless values
that underpin librarianship and that carry its vision well into the future.
These core values uphold learning, and thinking, and intellectual freedom,
and protect privacy, and foster democratic ideals.
But, as we also know, libraries are in a highly competitive environment.
Their work and their potential are not well understood, even by some of their
biggest fans out there, and they are in heavy competition for funds and for
other forms of support.
So we will look at some of these pressures in video three.
And finally, in video four, to get us all on the same page, we will look at
what advocacy is and isn't.
