I am Dave, a photographer living in Hong Kong.
About two months ago, I decided to deliver all finished products to four clients
who live all around Hong Kong, but, only by bicycle.
This is a video expressing my thoughts on the riding situation in Hong Kong.
It is said that cycling on the roads in Hong Kong is suicidal, but ironically bicycle is
the ideal urban vehicle for short distance.
The idea behind this one day bike messenger project is to discover what is missing for the city design
with the identity of a bike messenger.
In this four hours journey, I traveled nearly half of the entire Hong Kong.
The reason why bicycle is an ideal urban vehicle is simply because of its flexibility.
I easily avoided all the traffic jams.
But for town-to-town rides which, for this case,
from Kowloon Bay to Tsuen Wan, was a little bit too radical.
Anyway, it is only an experiment to show that the capability of bicycles is really quite underrated
in Hong Kong.
Sometimes for short distance, bicycles can easily beat all other public
transportation thanks to its flexibility.
But without the respect from all road users to each other,
Hong Kong will never be as bicycle-friendly and civilized like other top European cities.
Cycling has just too many benefits to our health, to the environment and to the city.
People ask, is it dangerous to ride in Hong Kong?
No, I am still in one piece.
