My name is Celia, and I am a student at the University of Washington.
I did not die in a car crash after my high school graduation party
because i was wearing a seat belt
and the car car had airbags.
Between 2000 and 2009,
the rate of car crash deaths fell by 26 percent
saving 32 lives every day.
My name is Amina
unlike my mother and grandmother
I had normal, healthy pregnancies
I did NOT die in childbirth
or have severe complications.
because i had access to prenatal visits and care, my children will grow up
with their mother.
Between 1990 and 2010,
annual maternal deaths worldwide fell by forty seven percent
My name is Adam
and I commute to work on my bike three times a week.
i did not have a stroke or heart attack last year
because I made changes in my life after my blood pressure showed up high.
luckily for me and many others that kind of screening is now routine
Heart disease and stroke are an epidemic in the U.S. today,
but the major risk factors CAN be controlled with regular screening tests
and adopting healthy lifestyle.
Public Health matters
to all of us
to future generations
the faculty graduates of the School of Public Health at the University of
Washington are making the communities of the world safer and healthier.
We work to ensure that the water we drink,
the food we eat, and the air we breathe are safe.
We work to ensure children are immunized
against polio, whooping cough, and other diseases,
and the elderly are vaccinated against pneumonia.
We work to create healthy places in both urban
and rural areas.
Because we believe EVERY community
deserves safe streets and open spaces.
We research what causes outbreaks of diseases
such as cholera and hantavirus.
We develop
strategies to reduce obesity.
We educate people that
that prompt care can
help relieve depression.
We work towards policies that reduce substance abuse, violence and unsafe sex
The faculty and graduates of the School of
Public Health at the University of Washington aremaking our world
safer and healthier.
