We are here with Fuji Kureta, who released their Sweets EP on May 2010.
And recently we have seen their Accident video from this EP.
How did Fuji Kureta get together?
I mean how Deniz and Sahin get together?
I was working as a translator in a translation office and Deniz was a freelance translator.
She told me it was better to work freelance, and she helped me out with this.
At first we were two translators helping each other.
And then by coincidence we learned that we were both making music.
Deniz sent me a song she wrote, “Toutes les femmes”
Its vocal recordings
I wrote something on it
and we began to work on it
In the beginning the song came out to be a jazzy track
and one night we did an electronica version of Toutes les femmes
It's how it all began
Deniz, I want to ask this to you
about the lyrics
here in Turkey even lyrics in English are not very acceptable
but you also write lyrics in French, why is that?
From the very beginning we didn’t want to have lyrics in Turkish
we didn’t think it suited this kind of music, frankly
which leaves English.
And French is my second language, after Turkish
I can also write in French
so we decided to use these two languages in our lyrics.
As a matter of fact I am much more confident in my French
I use a lot of dictionaries and stuff when I write lyrics in English
You won the best electronica act award of Miller Music factory in 2010
despite the fact that you didn’t perform live the jury chose you.
What did this award bring to you?
It made a great contribution to us in terms of promotion.
More people heard our name.
And we figured that what we are doing is something good
I mean it built our confidence a little, not much, but a little.
When you make music by yourself, sometimes you question the quality,
but when such a distinguished jury, musicians and DJs of Dinamo FM gave approval
we thought “ok, we can continue now”
You have also played at this year’s Freshtival.
Yes. So we were able to play at Freshtival.
We have been to two festivals
One near Görlitz in eastern Germany
and the other one near Stutgart
We communicated with them via the Internet
So what kind of reactions do you get as a Turkish band?
We really got great reaction in Germany
A lot of people did not know that we were from Turkey
They asked “Oh! Are you from Turkey?"
How come you make this kind of music?”
If you are Turkish they expect some ethnic elements in your music.
Yes we don’t use Ney or Turkish percussions.
You have released your first album from a NetLabel
I guess you are planning to release the second one the same way
What can you say about these NetLabels?
NetLabels are some people that came together
Some of them sell the MP3s over the Internet
Some distribute for free
We work with a Slovakian NetLabel, GERGAZ
A few young people…
The label has a website
They distribute the MP3s there free of charge
They contact raidos
In fact they do what a label should do
but we keep the rights of our songs
and they don’t ask money from the listeners
It’s similar to the concept of Creative Commons
Like open source music
Recently you gave “Bonjour” as a soundtrack for a movie, Small Beautifully Moving Parts,
by two American directors
How did this happen?
They sent us an e-mail
We don’t know how did they hear
where did they listen the song
They just said “We want to use this song. It suits our movie very well.”
And we said OK.
It was an Internet series called Sparks
When people liked the series, they have decided to make a feature film.
We were very happy
we said OK.
I guess the film will be released in USA soon.
What are your gigs, plans for the near future?
The nearest gig is at ***
On the 22nd of January, at ***, with Yora…
There aren’t any gigs other than this.
In fact we have decided not to play since October
we try not to
because we want to complete our new EP.
However if someone invites us once in a month we go.
So there aren’t many gigs now.
I have a question about the EP.
Is it going to be in a format similar to Sweets EP
or how many tracks is it going to include?
Will you release an album?
We have a lot of finished songs now.
In fact there are some songs traveling around the Internet that weren’t included in the EP.
With our new songs we might reach a number where we can release an album
but we have to sit down and work.
Thank you for the interview.
We thank you.
