Nuclear disarmament conference held in Berlin. Opening on Friday, July 1 in Berlin, Germany,
the focus of the 59th annual Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs is peace through
disarmament. Addressing the 350 policy makers and experts from 43 different countries, UN
Secretary General Ban Ki-moon commended the organization's consistent efforts to promote
security and human welfare across the globe. Hosting German Foreign Minister *** Westerwelle
spoke of the recent Russian-US nuclear arms reduction treaty, which he said renewed the
disarmament process for the first time in ten years. Additional topics being discussed
during the four-day meeting include conflict in the Middle East and other regions, with
suggestions for initiatives that further the goal of eliminating nuclear arms worldwide.
Our respectful appreciation, Secretary-General Ban, Minister Westerwelle and all participants
of the Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs, for your ongoing endeavors of peace.
May the day come soon that this noble goal is realized for safety and harmony to prevail
among all inhabitants of the Earth
