Hi, my name is Micheal Orkin and I am a television producer. What are the tools needed to be
a television producer? Well, lets talk about video tools first. I look right at this camera
for everything. You need a camera. That's the number one most important thing for a
television producer to have, at least the access to a camera or someone who knows how
to use a camera, but you've got to have a camera. You need shotgun microphone for the
camera. I think in the kind of producing that I do, which is documentary form, long form
television, you must have wireless microphones to put on people. You need a tripod, and the
better the tripod the better video you're going to get. You need lights, television
lights, which burn at a temperature that makes things look really good. And that's kind of
it for the field end of it. You probably need a word processor. You probably need Internet
access. Those things are imperative. And you may not need it but you'll need access to
editing equipment which is when you shoot video and you've set up your shoot and you've
made it happen and you have all this video. You then have to log it and take the little
pieces of what you've shot out, and have someone or you edit them. And luckily the world's
gotten a lot easier where a lot of people can edit at home with Final Cut Pro or Avid.
And luckily that's something that's gotten much cheaper and much more available to the
public. But pretty much, those are the things you need, those are the tools you need to
be a television producer.
