Do you work in the food service industry in California?
Are you confused about which training or certification program to take?
I'm here to help you understand the difference between the California Food Handler Card
and the Food Safety Certification so that you'll know which program is best for you.
According to the law, at least one Food Manager per food establishment
must obtain the Food Safety Certification, also known as the Food Manager Certification
A manager is usually the person in charge or PIC. Valid food safety certifications
are provided by only three organizations: ServSafe, Prometric and NRFSP
The food safety certification is valid for 5 years. It must be obtained within 60 days
of starting a new food business or if a new food manager needs to become certified
for an existing food business.
The California Food Handler Card Law
requires all food handlers, unless exempt,
to obtain their Food Handler Card from an ANSI-accredited training provider.
By the way, Premier Food Safety was the first California-based company to receive this ANSI
accreditation.
The Food Handler Card must be obtained within 30 days of new hire date and it's valid
for 3 years.
Food Handlers in the counties of Riverside, San Bernardino or San Diego are exempt from
this law, as they have their own food handler requirements.
As an approved provider, Premier Food Safety offers both the Food Safety Certification
and the California Food Handler Card via classroom training as well as online training.
