Here I have two cameras in my hand. One of them is a big SLR, the other one is a small compact.
The biggest difference of these cameras is not that the bigger one takes more beautiful images.
This is not true actually. The small one takes just as beautiful images as the big one.
The biggest difference of these cameras is that the small compact fits your pocket.
But the big camera does not fit my pocket.
Lets go and test the one that captures nice images and fits my pocket.
This camera is called the Ricoh GR. Although it may seem as a regular compact
camera, it is actually a very special compact camera.
The image sensor inside this camera makes it special. It is not the tiny regular type
but a big APS-C type sensor. It is exactly the same size as most dSLR cameras.
Thanks to the big sensor, the image quality of the Ricoh GR is on par with big dSLR cameras.
Firstly, a bigger sensor is more sensitive to light. This means that you can take sharp images
in low light with no visible image noise. Secondly, bigger sensor means more saturation and
contrast. This translates to vivid images. Thirdly, bigger sensor gives you the possibility
to use shallow depth of field which is good for blurred backgrounds and portrait work.
The lens of this camera has received only rave reviews. Firstly, unlike regular compacts this
lens is almost free of flare and reflections when used in contre-jour situations.
Secondly, the image is very sharp. This means that all the in-focus details are tack sharp.
Thirdly, this lens has almost non-existent geometrical distortions. For example,
when I capture this door, then we can see that the barrel distortion of regular
wide angle lenses can not be found here.
One more thing about this lens is that it is a prime lens - it has no zoom.
If I would like to capture the town square then the screen image is all I can capture.
I can not zoom in on the girl sitting on the bench or the lamp post. I also can't zoom
out to increase the viewing angle.
However, we all have other means of zooming. For instance we have hands to zoom in
on close subjects and then we have feet. To capture the girl sitting there I can use my
feet to zoom in. I just approach her. "Hello unknown girl. Can I take a picture of you?"
"It is very nice that you agreed." This way we can use zoom on a lens that has no zoom.
Ricoh GR is made for photo enthusiasts who want to capture beautiful images without lugging
around a bulky SLR camera. Ricoh GR fits your pocket and is always ready when you need it.
