What is an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ)? An administrative law judge, called an ALJ
for short, is the official who conducts Social Security hearings, including disability hearings,
and decides whether to approve or deny your appeal. ALJ’s go through a very intensive
selection process that includes testing and panel interviews. (It is interesting to note
that in 2011 all but one ALJ was also an attorney.) Once they are selected, the new ALJ’s take
