Yoshinogari Site, located at Yoshinogari Town and Kanzaki City in Saga Prefecture, is a large and complex Yayoi archaeological site.
This site had existed for 600 years between the 3th century BC and the 3th century AD and had its toral area of 0.4 square kilometer.
This time, I took the scenery of the site from watchtowers in Kitanaikaku (Northern Inner Enclosure) and Minaminaikaku (Southern Inner Enclosure).
Kitanaikaku (Northern Inner Enclosure) is assumed the most important political area in Yoshinogari.
The 10-meter-high watchtower is believed to have been used as an enemy lookout post and additionally to have had a purpose in worshipping the area.
There are four watchtowers along the double fosses and board walls.
Climbing the steps of tower, high-ceilinged storehouses and high-floored storehouses, where seeds and shrine tools are stored, can be seen.
This three-storied building is Main Shrine where important meetings and ritual gatherings were held.
The fosses has 2 to 3 meters deep. As an origin of Japanese castles, Yoshinogari site was elected as one of the 100 Fine Castles of Japan.
Minaminaikaku (Southern Inner Enclosure) is assumed the residential area for the successive rulers of Yoshinogari.
Contrary to watchtowers in Kitanaikaku, ones here is used only as an enemy lookout post and its architecture is simpler.
From the watchtower, the scenery of Yoshinogari Historical Park (including the site and surroundings) and the Yoshinogari Hill can be seen.
Rulers of Yoshinogari site had lived in these vertical caves housing.
Ceremonies and audiences are held in the central gathering place.
