Let's talk a little bit about the textbook.
this is the book that we ask our students here at [UNKNOWN], the University of
Pennsylvania to get when to take our, if you wish, brick and mortar class.
The book is a book that I wrote together with my friend and [UNKNOWN] Gerard
Cachon. It's called Matching Supply with Demand:
An Introduction to Operations Management. And it's a book that is used by many of
the top business schools around the world.
Gerard and I wrote the book with the paradigm of real operations, real simple.
So, this is not a book that is heavy on the math, it's not a book that is only
there for some academic ivory tower computations.
But the book summarizes the most important tools and frameworks of
operations management and applies them to about a dozen company that we have worked
with over the years. Thus, really the book will help you to
read beyond the lectures to get a sense of other applications beyond what we do,
practice the material, access to more quizzes, practice problems, and the like.
Now, let me emphasize that the book is not required.
And all the content that you need for passing this course, including slides,
practice problems, Excel spreadsheets, will be posted for free on the Coursera
website. So, this is just something that if you
want to do a little bit more, you need some extra help, the book is there for
you. Now, I understand the textbooks,
including this one, can be rather pricey. For example, Amazon is selling our
textbook for $127. With this in mind, I work with our
publisher, McGraw Hill, and we created an ebook of the relevant chapters of the
Third Edition, which is the latest edition, that are the most relevant for
this Coursera course, An Introduction to Operations Management.
That includes about somewhere between half and 2 3rds of support.
It includes all the chapters that we're covering in this course.
And Mcgraw Hill has agreed to price the book for $30 and distributed through
their ebook publishing platform, that I'll explain in a moment.
As I said, the book is optional, you do not have to buy it.
The material that you really need to take the course is published at Coursera for
free. But again, I do think that the book is a
useful helper as you're taking this course.
If there's a book or something that you want to order, you simply go on the
Mcgraw-Hill website, which is at create.mcgraw-hill.com/shop.
You'll simply then enter my name, and one of the nice things being called Terwiesh,
is there are not too many of us. you go to the introduction to operations
management. And from there, you can basically add the
book just like you would buy anything else on Amazon or in another Internet
store. From here, you can simply enter the user
information and you will be prompted to enter a university.
I'll leave that one up to you. But if you want you can enter USA for
country, Pennsylvania for state, and the University of Pennsylvania then for the
school. you then will, after paying you get to
download an application that is basically the ebook management software that
McGraw-Hill uses that allows you then to have the book on your computer.
You can print it. You can highlight text.
You can go back to pages that you've done.
there is a digital rights management installed here, just to prevent that you
simply save everything as a PDF file and post it on the internet for everybody to
grab. but I have tested it before just
producing this video and I found the software and the ereader relatively easy
to use. And again, more details on how to get the
e-book shown in the pdf document that I post on this website
