To commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those that lost their lives on Guam during
World War II, 3,055 flags were placed at Asan Beach for Memorial Day weekend. 1,885 American
flags represent each soldier, sailor, and Marine life lost. 1,170 Guam flags represent
each civilian life lost. The display was designed and surveyed by volunteers from the Army 142nd
Engineer Detachment with support from the Air Force 554th Red Horse Squadron. The flags
were placed by over 350 volunteers from all over the island.
