Hi, my name is Ekkehard Voigt. Today I want to introduce you into playing and building the didgeridoo!
- The instrument -
The didgeridoo is a very old instrument played by air presure.
Its often made from a 1 meter up to 2.5 meter long branch from the eucalyptus tree, which was eroded by termits.
On one end is a mouthpiece attached which the player uses to blow air into the didgeridoo, to create a drone sound.
Originally the instrument has its roots in north australia and was or is played by the original inhabitants called aboriginals.
It is asumed that the didgeridoo is around 50.000 years old or even older.
The aboriginals are playing the instrument during rituals, parties and spritual moments.
Nowadays you can find the didgeridoo all around the world.
It is made from a great variety of woods.
Often the sandwich technique is used or a special driller to erode the wood, so an new didgeridoo could be builded.
Young and old people can learn to play the didgeridoo and with some practice they will be able to created complex ryhthms.
Discover with this DVD the instrument didgeridoo and find your own style and rythm!
- How to build the instrument -
And how to build a didgeridoo like this, I will show you NOW!
To build it you need the following materials:
A plastic flower vase like this,
a PVC pipe,
a round wooden ring.
- Material reminder -
PVC pipe: length 1.1 meter // diameter 4 cm // 1.50 Euros
Plastic garden vase: length 30 cm // diameter head 12 cm // 2.99 Euros
Wooden ring: inner diameter 2.5 cm // outer diameter 4 cm // 0.50 Euros
Spraying varnis: whatever you like, I took the granit-look 4.99 Euros
In total 9.89 Euros!
Tools you need:
sandpaper
ducktape
a cutter (knife)
an edding (pen)
a bow saw
and a hot-melt gun.
- The sound corpus-
We are starting with the connection parts, between the garden vase and the PVC pipe.
To do so, we are taking the PVC pipe and cut off the bigger end part.
To unsharpening the edges of the cut, we are using the cutter, like I'm doing it.
- The *** -
And for the bell end of the didgeridoo, we are cutting away the end of the garden vase, which normally goes into the ground.
Mark the right cutting proportion or place, with the pen, like I'm demonstrating here. So the cut will fit perfectly!
To be able to attach the bell end to the PVC pipe, you have to sandpaper the end of the PVC pipe. (The side you cut before of).
After that you put a ring of glue around the end of the PVC pipe, which was sandpapered.
Then slide the vase from the other end of the pipe to the ring of glue so it is locked there.
Now secure the vase from outside and put another ring of glue on the PVC pipe like shown. If you want add even more glue.
- The mouth piece -
To build the important mouth piece of the didgeridoo, we will glue the wooden ring to the other end of the PVC pipe.
We preparing the ring by adding hot glue to one whole side.
After that you connect the PVC pipe to our mouth piece.
In addition you have to secure the mouth piece from outside with an extra portion of glue.
- The finishing -
Finally you stabilize the bell end with duck tape.
Be creative and paint your instrument in the way you prefer.
Congratulations you are done and your didgeridoo is finished!
I wish u a lot of fun by playing and discovering your own instrument!
