Hi there, my name is Dominika Zarzeczny, Naturopathic Doctor at NutriChem Biomedical Clinic in Ottawa.
I frequently get asked what I think of juicing. And I think juicing is wonderful way of getting
vitamins and minerals into your diet on a regular basis. Juicing essentially extracts
water, vitamins and minerals from your produce, like fruits and vegetables, into a form you
can readily consume.
People that have issues with digestion, who have been sick for some time can actually
really benefit from juicing, because it really takes away from having to break that fiber
down, break down those starches to extract those vitamins and minerals. The one thing
that you want to keep in mind, is that when you're juicing you are throwing away the fiber
component of fruits and vegetables. Now fiber is important because it lowers the glycemic
index of foods. So when we're thinking of the glycemic index of foods, it's really how
quickly sugar gets from the intestines into the blood stream.
So whether your sugar is coming from fruits, or whether it's coming from table white sugar,
sugar is sugar. And so fiber really helps lower that. In the absence of fiber, what
you really want to do is follow the 80 20 rule. 80% vegetables, 20% fruit. And that
will really help regulate how much sugar you're getting from your juicing. This has been Dominika
Zarzeczny, Naturopathic Doctor from NutriChem Biomedical Clinic in Ottawa, see you next
time.
