Welcome to this Government Compensation in California website tutorial offered by the
State Controller’s Office.
Topic: Making Charts
Want to put public employee salary data into perspective with a custom report?
This tutorial will help you make a chart using the report building function on the California
State Controller’s Office public compensation website.
The Controller is proud to offer improved tools that allow the public to study and better
interpret compensation data for more than 1.5 million positions.
The tools may be accessed at publicpay.ca.gov.
Get started by clicking on the Report Builder link at the top of the page.
Begin by selecting a report type. We’ll look at Summaries. Click on Summaries.
Let’s make a pie chart offering a look at total 2010 compensation for employees to the
state, counties, cities, special districts and higher education.
To do this, leave the Filter Option boxes checked for all categories.
Leave the Report Type set on Summary.
Leave the Dataset set on Total Wages.
Set the year to 2010.
This will generate a pie chart showing the breakdown.
You can also see the same data in other ways. Let’s try a bar chart.
And we can make a simple chart.
You can save the simple chart results.
The State Controller’s Office is committed to transparency, and we hope this evolving
database will help provide a better understanding of state and local governments.
Thank you for watching!
