Seven designers flaunted their Maori inspired designs
in Fashion Week's Miromoda Show today.
Maori designers from across the country
competed to have their garments included in NZ's
most prestigious fashion event, and the expectations were high.
Peata Melbourne was back again today to see what Maori fashion house,
Miromoda brought to the catwalk this year.
Peata.
Just five years on,
Miromoda is taking Maori designers under their wing,
and it seems they're taking Maori fashion to new heights.
Miromoda taking to the stage with one intention in mind.
A half-hour show production proving a costly event.
Emerging designers like Kylie Mangan are facing the struggles
of sponsorship and funding.
The Australia-based designer
draws on her memories of the marae.
Leilani Rickard incorporates
her day job as a flax weaver in to her garments.
It's a nanny and moko collaboration who have fused science and fashion.
Miromoda have also agreed
to work collaboratively with Australia
for the Inaugural Fashion Conference and Awards Design in 2015.
South East Asia, Canada, Australia, all of the Pacific
are included as guests.
By casting more Maori models and using Maori designers,
Miromoda can confidently say they've browned the event up.
But she'd like to see even more Maori on board,
in front and behind the scenes.
As the saying goes,
the young emerge when the old retires.
This business isn't easy,
but through bravery and hard work the dream comes true.
However, work continues on during the holidays.
That was Peata Melbourne at NZ Fashion Week.
